Stories that help you see beyond the headlines

On May 8, the NGO “Young Agents of Change” organized an exhibition as part of the international INSIGHT project at the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine (Chernihiv).

The aim of the exhibition is to draw attention to the issues of reintegration, human rights, and society’s attitude toward people who are serving sentences or returning to the community after their release.

In the Ukrainian context, the exhibition focuses on stories collected by our team and journalists during interviews at the Zhytomyr and Kolomyia correctional facilities. These are the stories of people who are serving sentences or returning to society after their release—about their experiences, challenges, stigma, and search for a fresh start.

Through these materials, we aim to stimulate public dialogue, encourage people to rethink their biases, and discuss resocialization and human rights without sensationalism or labels.

After all, we sincerely believe that it is through personal stories, empathy, and responsible communication that we can build a society founded on respect for human dignity and European values.

🤝 We would like to thank the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine for its cooperation, support, and assistance in organizing the exhibition and fostering an important public dialogue.

The INSIGHT project is being implemented Young Agents of Change in cooperation with AY Institute, Prirašytos rankos, Scambieuropei, Brodoto and is funded by the European Union.

How the online workshop “Ethical journalism about people serving sentences and returning to the community” went

On March 5, an online workshop was held on responsible coverage of the topics of punishment, resocialization, and reintegration of people into society. The event brought together penitentiary system specialists, journalists, human rights activists, students, and anyone else working on issues of justice, resocialization, and ethics.

During the webinar, we discussed why the topic of resocialization is important for community safety, what challenges people face after release, and what support approaches help them return to a full life. We paid special attention to the role of the media—how language, headlines, and presentation of materials shape public attitudes toward people after imprisonment.

We also discussed the basic principles of ethical reporting on this topic: how to avoid stigmatization, work with personal stories responsibly, and explain complex social processes without sensationalism or oversimplification.

Participants from various fields joined the workshop. For many, it was an opportunity to better understand the topic of resocialization and obtain practical tools for working with such stories in their professional activities.

We would like to thank all participants for their active involvement, and FREE ZONE for their cooperation and expertise on this important topic.

The workshop was held as part of the INSIGHT project, which is being implemented Young Agents of Change in cooperation with AY Institute, Prirašytos rankos, Scambieuropei, Brodoto and funded by the European Union.

Continuing the interview behind bars: more voices — more stories

At the Kolomyia Correctional Colony No. 41, we continued our series of interviews with people serving sentences.

The team of the NGO “Young Agents of Change,” together with employees of the social, educational, and psychological work department, held an educational lecture and recorded four interviews with convicts.

These interviews are about experience, responsibility, and the path that a person takes within the system. For participants from among the prisoners, this was another opportunity to be heard as people, not just as entries in the crime reports.

For media representatives — continuing to work on a deeper and more responsible understanding of the topics of crime, punishment, and reintegration.

The INSIGHT project is being implemented Young Agents of Change in cooperation with AY Institute, Prirašytos rankos, Scambieuropei, Brodoto and is funded by the European Union.

First interviews behind bars: stories of people who are often not heard

At Zhytomyr Penal Colony No. 4—a medium-security facility where men serving their first prison sentences for serious and particularly serious crimes are held—we conducted our first interviews with people whose stories are usually overlooked by the media.

The colony has been operating since 1933 and today is not only a place of punishment, but also a space for learning, work, and psychological support. It has educational institutions, a library, a medical unit, a psychological center, and vocational training programs.

As part of our work, we:

— conducted a workshop for eight prisoners on storytelling, critical thinking, and working with personal experiences;

— recorded four interviews with people serving prison sentences;

— worked in cooperation with representatives of the penitentiary system, who provided conditions for dialogue and activities.

For participants from among prisoners, these interviews became an opportunity to be heard not as just another “case” or “statistic,” but as people with their own experiences, reflections, and views on the future.

For media representatives, this is an opportunity to take a broader look at the topic of crime and punishment, to see the complexity of human stories and the responsibility that every word carries in the public sphere.

We are convinced that the way the media reports on crimes and the people behind them directly affects trust, reintegration, and the sense of justice in society. Responsible journalism begins where there is a willingness to listen—even in the most difficult contexts.

How to write about crime without bias — the second workshop, this time in Lviv!

On October 25, a workshop entitled Share Your Sight: How to Write About Crime Without Bias was held, bringing together journalists, editors, students, and media professionals from all over Ukraine.

💡 Over the course of several hours, participants immersed themselves in topics such as:

🔹 how to conduct interviews and prepare materials without stigma and prejudice;

🔹 what impact journalistic practices have on public trust in justice;

🔹 which cases from Ukraine and around the world are helping to change the approach to criminal journalism

👥 During lively discussions and group work, media professionals sought answers to difficult questions: How can we talk about crimes without perpetuating stereotypes of victims or perpetrators? How can we be accurate and empathetic at the same time?

The workshop became a space for networking, sharing experiences, and generating new ideas about what journalism should be like—journalism that supports justice, not fear.

🚀 The project continues a series of events aimed at developing ethical approaches to covering justice and reintegration issues. After all, change begins with those who create narratives—journalists.

The event was held as part of the INSIGHT project Young Agents of Change in cooperation with AY Institute , Prirašytos rankos, Scambieuropei, Brodoto and is funded by the European Union.

How to talk about crime without bias?

More than 30 journalists gathered in Kyiv to change the old rules of the game in the media.

On September 15, the Ukrainian-Danish Youth House hosted a workshop entitled Share Your Sight: How to Write About Crime Without Bias.

💡 The program included:

🔹 practical tools for conducting interviews and writing articles without stigma or bias;

🔹 presentation of research on the impact of journalistic practices on trust in justice;

🔹 discussion of international and local cases;

🔹 space for professional networking.

Invited speakers:

Vladyslava Kobko, a journalist with the independent investigative agency Slidstvo.Info. She talked about how to prepare for and conduct interviews with (war) criminals, obtain important testimony, and cope with the moral aspect.

Kateryna Seletska — journalist and expert at INSIGHT, with whom we analyzed Ukrainian and international cases and approaches to covering crime news. Special thanks for organizing and conducting the workshop. 👏

🚀 Наступний крок — залучення активних учасників та учасниць до створення історій разом із колишніми ув’язненими. Адже зміни в суспільстві починаються з відповідальних і чесних медіа.

The next step is to involve active participants in creating stories together with former prisoners. After all, change in society begins with responsible and honest media.Воркшоп відбувся за підтримки 🇺🇦🤝🇩🇰Ukrainian-Danish Youth House.

Yoga practice “Elements of Movement”

On August 15, as part of the INSIGHT project, a special event took place in a cozy yoga studio — a practice called “Elements of Movement” for representatives of Probation Ukraine.

The participants immersed themselves in gentle physical and emotional work to feel the power of the four elements:

💨 Air — we listened to our breathing and learned to let go of the excess.

🌍 Earth — simple yoga exercises helped me feel grounded and calm in my own body.

💧 Water — meditated to the sound of a waterphone, listening to their inner voice.

🔥 Fire — through movement and rhythm, they awakened energy and intention.

At the end of the event, everyone gathered in a warm circle for tea and reflection, where they shared their thoughts and feelings after the practice. They discussed separately the impact of meditation and the possibility of implementing a similar experience among probation clients.

🌱 The practice became a space for emotional release and restoration of inner resources. Participants noted that they felt more peace, warmth, and harmony, and realized how important such practices are for maintaining inner balance in difficult times and developing awareness.

Kateryna Seletska, journalist, radio and television presenter, and expert for the INSIGHT project, spoke about the importance of changing language—how to talk about imprisonment without prejudice.

Practical case studies were also presented:

Sofia Kozarno, a trainer for the INSIGHT project on developing soft skills for young prisoners and prisoners, shared her experience of conducting soft skills training sessions at the Kyiv Pre-Trial Detention Center.

Diana Semenova, head of the Chernihiv Regional Office, a branch of the State Institution “Probation Center in Chernihiv Region”, shared examples of working with probation clients in Chernihiv.

🔗 The event brought together over 100 experts from the penitentiary sector, human rights organizations, and the media community. Participants discussed the importance of ethical coverage of the topic, the impact of language on society’s attitude toward people with prison experience, and shared practical tools for support and resocialization.

We are grateful to everyone involved for their active participation and sincerely hope for further fruitful cooperation in building a society where everyone has a chance for a dignified future.

How can objectivity and justice exist together?

On July 8, 2025, we held an international online workshop “Report with Equity: Solutions Journalism”, which brought together more than 30 participants from Ukraine🇺🇦, Lithuania🇱🇹, Italy🇮🇹, and Croatia. 🇭🇷

The young journalists explored how to combine objectivity with an inclusive approach to covering complex social issues.

We discussed it together:

🔹What is objectivity in journalism and how can it be combined with equality?

🔹What are the four principles of journalistic decision-making?

🔹How to ensure fairness in the coverage of vulnerable groups without portraying them as victims?

🔹How do we create stories that focus on resilience and problem-solving rather than dramatizing them?

The workshop was a great opportunity for participants not only to gain theoretical knowledge, but also to practice developing media narratives that promote social change.

Consciousness is your first safety

📍 Young agents of change, together with clinicians from the legal clinic of the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine, conducted an important final online soft skills training session for young people in the Kyiv SIZO as part of the INSIGHT project.

💡 The topic of the meeting was “Information Security of Today. Disinformation and its impact on people”

🔎 During the class, we discussed:

– the impact of fakes and manipulations on a person’s worldview,

– the importance of information hygiene in the digital age,

– critical thinking as a key security skill in the modern world.

🧠 Such meetings contribute to the formation of analytical thinking, the ability to critically evaluate information, a conscious perception of events, and the skills necessary for independent conclusions and adaptation in the modern information environment.

🔑 Each of these initiatives is an important step towards the rehabilitation and reintegration of young people after release. The ability to distinguish the truth from manipulation, the ability to draw reasonable conclusions and choose safe paths for oneself is the basis for creating a free, responsible and conscious society.

Trainings within the INSIGHT project: Awareness raising and support for youth and probation clients

In June 2025, the international INSIGHT project conducted two important trainings aimed at raising legal and information awareness among young people, including minors, as well as probation clients of the Chernihiv District Department of the Probation Center branch in Chernihiv Oblast.

1️⃣ Training: “Release from the institution: social connections and online services for minors”

This training was aimed at providing juveniles with important knowledge and skills for successful social adaptation after release.

Participants had the opportunity to learn:

🪪 How to prepare basic documents;
🧩 Where to look for support after release;
🌐 What online services are available for young people;
🤝 How to build social connections.

The class was held in the form of interactive exercises, where participants were able to practically consolidate their knowledge through role-playing games and team tasks. This allowed them to better prepare for new social challenges and find resources for support in difficult situations.

2️⃣ Training on the topic: “Information security of today. Disinformation and its impact on people”

The second training was aimed at raising awareness among probation clients of the Chernihiv District Department. The participants learned:

🔎 What is disinformation and how it affects human consciousness;
💡 How to identify fakes and avoid becoming a victim of manipulation;
🧠 How to develop critical thinking and information hygiene skills.

The training included practical cases, which allowed participants to learn from real-life situations and increase their awareness of information security issues. Such trainings are extremely important nowadays, when the issue of disinformation is becoming more and more relevant.

How do you write about the world without losing yourself?

On June 11, we held an international online workshop “Write the World: Autoethnography”, which gathered 20 participants from Ukraine🇺🇦, Italy🇮🇹, Croatia🇭🇷, and Lithuania🇱🇹.

The journalists explored how to combine personal history with socio-cultural analysis, recognize their own biases and transform them into deep, responsible storytelling. Together we discussed:

🔹 objectivity vs. personal experience in journalism,

🔹 the method of autoethnography as a tool for self-awareness,

🔹 the role of critical writing in the representation of complex topics.

It was a space of honesty, research, and a deep connection with one’s profession.

📣 The workshop was held as part of the INSIGHT project, which is changing the way the media covers crime and promotes social reintegration through the power of stories.

The INSIGHT project continues a series of classes for juveniles in the Kyiv Detention Center

On May 8, 2025, the clinicians of the Legal Clinic of the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine held a new meeting as part of the INSIGHT project. This time the topic was practical, important, and very close to the participants:

“Job search after dismissal: from dream to reality”.

💬 We explored together in a dialog format:

🔹 possible ways of employment after release from places of detention;

🔹 the main legal and psychological barriers that may arise along the way;

🔹 how to recognize your strengths and build a personal employment strategy.

The conversation was held in an open and supportive format, which allowed the teenagers not only to gain knowledge but also to discuss their fears, ambitions, and visions for the future. This proves that everyone has the right to a second chance – especially when they have knowledge, support, and an action plan. ✊

INSIGHT: How the media shape perceptions of crime and trust in justice: watch the video

The INSIGHT project is an initiative aimed at changing the way crimes are covered in the media.

Together with our partners, we conducted a study to better understand how the media influence the perception of crime and trust in justice in society.

The results are impressive:

73% of respondents are convinced that the media should not only inform, but also responsibly shape public opinion. No sensationalism. With respect for human dignity.

Journalist Andriy Knezich notes:

“Thirty percent of people only read headlines.”

Sometimes one line defines how we see a person. Sometimes it changes its fate.

Today, the responsibility for what this vision will look like lies with each of us – not only journalists, but also everyone who creates and disseminates information.

Every word has weight. Every text can be the beginning of change.

The first INSIGHT class in the Kyiv SIZO: the start of support for juveniles

We are sharing an important event within the two-year Erasmus+ project INSIGHT, which aims to support journalists, representatives of the penitentiary system, and (former) prisoners.

📅 On April 25, 2025, the first lesson for minors was held at the Kyiv Pretrial Detention Center, which the team of trainers successfully conducted in an atmosphere of open dialogue and mutual respect.

The event was aimed at developing life skills and raising legal awareness among adolescents in detention. The teenagers showed great interest and involvement! Their thirst for knowledge and sincere desire to understand their rights confirm how important such initiatives are.

The trainers were clinicians from the legal clinic of the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine, who worked under a specially prepared program.

The main focus was on:

🔹 the rights of the child in conditions of deprivation of liberty,

🔹 key provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child,

🔹 the right to dignified treatment, protection from violence, access to education, medical care and legal support.

The experts also explained to the participants:

🔹 how SIZOs differ from penal colonies;

🔹 how prolonged detention in a pre-trial detention center affects the psychological state;

🔹 what rights minors have to privacy, communication with relatives, and protection from isolation.

💬 “We want young people to feel heard, to have knowledge of their rights and resources for their future life after release, even in such difficult circumstances,” the trainers emphasized.

The open dialogue format allowed minors not only to listen, but also to actively interact – to ask questions, share their experiences, and receive moral and legal support.

Together we create conditions for new chances and new life stories. 💙
